So, my first semester teaching has wrapped. For the most part, a great endeavor — engaged students, the rewarding process of watching their success. The major dose of reality? Turning in my grades today.
– What am I supposed to do about the student who didn’t complete the final project and didn’t show up for the exam and hasn’t gotten in touch with me?
– You’re supposed to give him an F.

– I don’t know. Sometimes he came to class, sometimes he didn’t. Sometimes maybe hung over, sometimes maybe not. I don’t really know what happened. I just know he didn’t do his assignments.

They have a long life ahead, Katie says.
Wise One leans back. Sighs. They’re not the ones under the bridge, you know, Wise One says. They’re everywhere instead.
Maybe someone is trying to help them, Katie says. Put them through school, like it might make a difference. Some people think that sort of thing is ”helping.”

About ten years ago, on a year-long cross-country road trip with way too many afternoons with nothing to do, I sat in the gardens outside National Cathedral and wrote a list of the things I would do when I became a teacher. Or was it, “Theories on Teaching, While Not Yet a Teacher”? Ah, wait, here’s the entry itself, sitting beside me, in a handwriting that I had once, a few letters of which still look exactly the same (lowercase Fs, how I shift from penmanship to print for parenthetical phrases).
Most of the thoughts are too embarrassingly simplistic and naive to transcribe here.
What I find more interesting than any of my thoughts on teaching — or at least on testing (”Life is not a series of questionnaires, and children should not be taught to approach their studies as such”) — is that I continually refer to the students as “children,” a term I would never use to describe the students in my class this semester, my first semester teaching. Of course, most of my students are my age, close to my age, or much older, which means that absolutely none of them qualify as children. They are, of course, children of someone, but clearly: not children. Nearly all of them speak more languages than I do. Most of them are working on really important stuff. They are not writing websites with goofy photos of their nephews and his magnifying glasses, or photos of horses and barns. They are creating websites about projects they do to improve the sanitary conditions for migrant populations in distant countries, and figuring out how to communicate via websites to train people to educate others about malaria prevention, and so on.
None of them has made even the most minor of mentions about posting a ditty on the last great band they plugged into Pandora. Or posting self-awareness questionnaire results, graphs that color code their passions and flaws, or results from the ever-popular What City I Would Be If I Were a City?
Well, these students have been quite refreshing. One is very happy that this group of people exists in this world. One is very happy to have provided them a tool to share their information. Tomorrow, one will be very very happy if they have all completed their final websites and are prepared to present their sites. One will be disappointed if the students are not prepared. One is certain that four of them are ready, which means that one is uncertain about the other, say, eight or nine. One wants them all to have made beautiful, useful websites that somehow help this big, bad world. One hopes she has done a good job teaching them.

And a disappointing event: my blog was interrupted last night. I have about twenty never-published entries saved in a draft folder. Most of them too personal or angsty to publish, but have held onto them as a digital diary. And unfortunately, an entry was published last night while I was at a work event, despite my blog not having a Publish Later feature. I’ve mulled this over a number of times, and I can’t think of any way this was accomplished by my own fingers. A curious event indeed.
This reminds me, vaguely, of the time I was contacted about the hijacking of an organizational website I (luckily) didn’t manage, but was able to help resolve. Their site had been taken over with more drastic consquences than my personal diatribe about not having enough time in every day to do everything I’d like to do, but both are keen reminders of the fragility of our communications devices.

Knowing I had to give a reading in Devil’s Den but overwhelmed by the task of selecting my own work before I left town, I decided to read excerpts from Travels with Charley by John Steinbeck, the ideal book for reading around a campfire, which I did often in the year that Robb and I traveled around the United States like bums. Read it aloud to anyone who would listen. So in the days before departing, I began reading exerpts aloud again, and all who listened enjoyed, as all who read should. A great American journey story — and, no two being alike, just as Steinbeck writes, none quite a new invention either. He captures the spirit of the people he meets so well, and every time I read this book I want so badly to crawl into the back of his truck with him and sit down for a cup of coffee and twenty or thirty minutes of conversation. This book is the closest any of us will ever get.
I ended up reading my own poetry at the reading, along with three poems by Bishop, Carruth, and Mueller, but have happily returned to Travels with Charley to finish reading it again. Perhaps I have read it fifteen times. Last night, I flipped randomly to a passage and found myself laughing out loud, particularly at the “highway sign” part, a passage closely related to something I wrote just weeks ago in the short story I’m working on, although certainly Mr. Steinbeck wrote it better and smarter:
… It isn’t hunger that drives millions of armed American males to forests and hills every autumn, as the incidence of of heart failure among the hunters will prove. Somehow the hunting process has to do with masculinity, but I don’t quite know how. I know there are any number of good and efficient hunters who know what they are doing; but many more are overweight gentlemen, primed with whiskey and armed with high-powered rifles. They shoot at anything that moves or looks as though it might, and their success in killing one another may well prevent a population explosion. If the casualties were limited to their own kind there would be no problem, but the slaughter of cows, pigs, farmers, dogs, and highway signs makes autumn a dangerous season in which to travel.
