It’s been great to have other people come over and play the piano. But for the most part, I’ve just stared at it or let my kids hammer away. So last night I tried again, this time giving up the Piano for Dummies attempt at reading music. I found that if I stopped trying to listen to the sounds for instruction on how to move my hands — which doesn’t work well since I can’t differentiate between the sounds well enough to intentionally repeat them — and instead watched the keys for a particular pattern, then I could actually make music that sounded pretty enough for my kids to start dancing.I can thank Chaucer for this sudden improvement in my piano skills. I’ve been reading “The Canterbury Tales” lately. I keep marking lines that clearly sing their meter, even though I’m foraging through the unfamiliar sounds of Middle English for the first time as well. Often I have to read out loud, concentrate on rhythm instead of content, or re-read a couplet a couple times to hear Chaucer’s meter. So I keep track in the margins when I hear his meter without difficulty on a first reading.
Despite my appreciation for poetry, meter has been an issue for me since fifth grade English lessons in which we had to scan a line of text and draw slashes and u-shapes above it to denote the rhythm. I couldn’t see it. I’d read the line a half dozen ways, always hearing it in a different “song,” or with a different meter or set of inflections. This made it impossible for me to get those marks written correctly above the text, and I grew angrier with my teacher for turning poetry into math. I don’t think that reading Chaucer in the fifth grade would have sped the learning process, but I’m someone singing a few lines might have done it for me.
Last night, when I watched my hands crawl across the keys — or better yet, I didn’t watch what I was doing and instead just felt the motion — I moved them in a pattern that I imagined was the rhythm of a line of poetry.
